What a difference one weekend makes to financial markets. On Friday, December 9, European leaders struck a new deal to contain the euro zone debt crisis that would create more firepower to help support sovereign bond markets, set new enforcement mechanisms to require member countries to comply with annual budget constraints, and commit to bring forward the new 500 billion euro rescue fund, the European Stabilization Mechanism (ESM), by one year to make it operational by July 2012.

The ‘super committee’ assigned the goal of reaching a compromise in Congress to cut $1.2 trillion from the U.S. budget deficit announced Monday it has failed by its self-imposed deadline of November 23. In the end, the six Democrats and six Republicans on the deficit committee could not agree on an acceptable mix of tax increases and federal spending cuts.
